Oslo

Oslo's origins trace back to the Viking Age, when it was known as "Aesloa" or "Áslo." The city was founded around 1000 AD, and archaeological finds indicate a bustling Viking settlement at its core.

In the early 14th century, Oslo became the capital of Norway under King Haakon V. The Akershus Fortress, which still stands proudly today, was constructed to protect the city from foreign invaders.

In 1624, a devastating fire led King Christian IV to relocate and rename the city as Christiania, later spelled Kristiania. It remained the capital of Denmark-Norway until 1814.

Throughout the centuries, Oslo faced fires, plagues, and invasions, but it endured. In 1814, Norway's constitution was signed in Eidsvoll, marking a significant step toward independence from Danish rule.

In 1905, Norway peacefully dissolved its union with Sweden, and Oslo was reaffirmed as the capital. The city underwent rapid urbanization, transforming into a modern metropolis. Christiania reclaimed its original name, Oslo, in 1925.

Today, Oslo stands as a dynamic hub of culture, innovation, and nature, where historic landmarks like the Royal Palace and the Viking Ship Museum coexist with cutting-edge architecture and pristine fjords.
