During World War II, Myanmar was occupied by the Japanese, and after the war, it regained independence from Britain in 1948. The post-independence years were marked by political turmoil and ethnic conflicts.

In 1962, a military coup led by General Ne Win ushered in a period of military rule that lasted for nearly five decades. Myanmar was renamed the Union of Myanmar in 1989. The military government faced opposition from various pro-democracy movements, most notably led by Aung San Suu Kyi.

In the early 21st century, Myanmar began a process of political reform, culminating in the 2010 elections and the release of Aung San Suu Kyi from house arrest. Despite these changes, ethnic conflicts and human rights issues remained challenges.

In recent years, Myanmar has continued to face significant challenges, including the Rohingya crisis and a military coup in 2021.
