Fort Siloso is a historic fort on Sentosa Island in Singapore. It was built in the 1880s by the British to protect Singapore’s harbor. At that time, Singapore was an important trading port, and the British wanted to defend it from enemy ships. The fort was equipped with large cannons, tunnels, and bunkers where soldiers could hide and store weapons.
During World War II, Fort Siloso played an important role in defending Singapore. In 1942, the Japanese army attacked Singapore from the north, instead of by sea, which the fort was designed to defend. After heavy fighting, Singapore fell to the Japanese, and the fort was taken over. The Japanese used it as a prison for British and Australian soldiers during the war.
After the war, Singapore became independent, and Fort Siloso was no longer needed as a military base. Instead of being destroyed, it was turned into a museum in the 1970s. Today, visitors can explore the tunnels, see old cannons, and learn about Singapore’s wartime history. The fort is the only preserved coastal fort in Singapore, making it an important historical site.
