King Ludwig II built the most famous castle in the world and then spent about 172 days living in it. Seven weeks after he died, strangers were paying to walk through his bedroom.

He would have hated that. Ludwig built Neuschwanstein to get away from people, not to show it off.

He became King of Bavaria in 1864 at just 18 years old. He wasn't interested in ruling, and by 1866 Bavaria had lost most of its independence anyway.

So Ludwig built a dream world instead. He loved the operas of the composer Richard Wagner, full of knights, swans, and legends, and he wanted a castle that looked like one.

The first stone was laid on September 5, 1869, on a rocky ridge above the village of Hohenschwangau in the Bavarian Alps. A theater set designer, not an architect, drew the first sketches.

Ludwig thought it would take three years. It took seventeen and was never finished.

The outside looks medieval, but the inside was modern for its time. It had running water on every floor, flush toilets, central heating, and a telephone.

Ludwig paid for all of it himself and borrowed heavily. By 1886 his ministers declared him insane, arrested him, and removed him from power.

The next day he was found dead in a lake. Nobody has ever proven what happened.

The castle opened to visitors a few weeks later to help pay off his debts. During World War II, the Nazis hid stolen artwork inside it.

Walt Disney visited in the 1950s and used it as the model for Sleeping Beauty Castle at Disneyland. In 2025 it became a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Walk out onto the Marienbrücke, the footbridge over the gorge, for the classic view of the whole castle against the mountains. Take the guided tour to see the Throne Room, which has no throne because Ludwig died before it arrived. Look for swans carved, painted, and sewn into nearly every room.
