Liberia, often called "Land of the Free," was founded by formerly enslaved African Americans.

In the early 19th century, the American Colonization Society established Liberia as a haven for free African-Americans and freed slaves from the United States. The settlers, inspired by the ideals of liberty, began to establish settlements along the West African coast. Monrovia, named after U.S. President James Monroe, became the capital in 1824.

Liberia declared its independence on July 26, 1847, becoming the first African nation to do so. It adopted a constitution inspired by that of the United States and began forming a national identity. However, tensions arose between the Americo-Liberian elite and indigenous groups, leading to political and social struggles that would persist for much of Liberia's history.

The 20th century brought both progress and turmoil. Liberia maintained its independence during the Scramble for Africa but struggled with political instability, including a coup in 1980. The subsequent civil wars (1989-2003) were marked by violence and suffering. Thousands lost their lives, and the nation's infrastructure was devastated.

The early 21st century saw efforts to rebuild Liberia. The end of the Second Liberian Civil War in 2003 and the election of Ellen Johnson Sirleaf as the first female African head of state in 2005 were significant steps toward stability and democratic governance. Liberia made strides in education, health care, and infrastructure.

Despite progress, Liberia faces challenges in areas like governance, economic development, and social reconciliation. However, the resilient Liberian people continue to work towards a brighter future.
