One of the world's largest active volcanoes sits on an island most people can't find on a map. Welcome to Comoros.
This tiny nation floats in the Indian Ocean between Africa and Madagascar. Three volcanic islands make up the country. A fourth island, Mayotte, voted to stay with France and causes arguments to this day.
Bantu peoples from Africa settled here over a thousand years ago. Arab traders arrived by the 800s, bringing Islam and new traditions. The islands became a blend of African, Arab, and Persian cultures.
Powerful sultans controlled Comoros for centuries. France colonized the islands in the 1800s. They wanted plantations and a stopping point for ships heading to Madagascar.
Independence came on July 6, 1975. But things got messy fast.
Over 20 coups or attempted coups have rocked the country since then. A French mercenary actually took over the government several times. Stability has been hard to find, though things have calmed down since the 1990s.
Mount Karthala towers over the main island, Grande Comore. The volcano last erupted in 2005. You can hike to the massive crater, but check if it's in a good mood first.
Mohéli Marine Park has sea turtles, dolphins, and untouched coral reefs. The beaches stay empty because so few tourists visit. Old Stone Town in the capital still has its ancient mosques and winding stone streets.
Comoros is called the "Perfume Islands" for good reason. Ylang-ylang flowers, vanilla, and cloves grow everywhere. The air smells incredible.
Food here blends African, Arab, and French cooking. Fresh fish with coconut rice is a staple. Tropical fruits taste better when picked that morning.
The Grand Marriage tradition can cost more than a house. Families save for years to throw these massive celebrations. It's the biggest honor in Comorian culture.
Comoros remains one of the poorest and most overlooked countries on Earth. But empty beaches, active volcanoes, and a culture unlike anywhere else make it special. The best adventures happen where the crowds aren't.
